3 Ways to Stay Balanced as the Seasons Change
According to Ayurveda the microcosm reflects the macrocosm and the macrocosm reflects the microcosm. In other words, our inner and outer worlds are connected and constantly reflecting back at each other.
As the seasons shift so does our internal environment in order to maintain harmony and health. Sometimes this change can create instability and imbalance. This is one reason people tend to suffer colds and ailments during this time as their inner world catches up with the outer world.
Just as when Winter turns to Spring we do a 'Spring Clean' in preparation for a warmer more extroverted time of year, it is helpful to do the same as we shift from Summer to Autumn in preparation for the more introverted part of the year.
1.Find Your Space
Summer is a season to be social and saucy! If you are a super summery person it can be hard not to resent the seasons shifting. Find things you enjoy during the Autumn. There's a reason our American friends call it fall. It is a season to fall back a little.
Give yourself the time and space to surrender to this fall. Perhaps add some warmer colours to your home or set aside some time for an Autumn clear out to create some more inner space both physically and mentally for more time spent indoors.
2.Add Some Spice
As the air cools around you it's important to maintain inner heat for both your digestion and immunity, especially if you have a Vata or Kapha dominant dosha.
Spices that are a great addition for some autumnal warmth include ginger, cinnamon, clove and nutmeg.
Small changes and additions can make all the difference.
3.Invest In Yourself
September, of course, is the month when the new school year starts and everyone with children is preparing for them to go back to school. The cooler, darker weather naturally lends itself to this shift.
Just because you are not a child anymore doesn't mean you can't take advantage of this and find ways to stay curious, develop and acquire new skills.
The month of September is also a great time for adults to take a look at their routine to see what serves them and what doesn't. In Ayurveda, routine is queen! Take a look at yours and see if there is a space for something that lights your fire :)
